day 30!!!!!!!! -30 in 30
mission accomplished yippee! Though I will still be posting the last 8 squares of my Van Gogh project here and on FB and IG. I got three squares done two days ago so I had a little breather. Now I have roofers banging on the roof (habla espanol?) threatening to fall through so it's a good day to distract myself with painting!
day 29-30 in 30
so the second last day of the 30 in 30! I got three squares done yesterday so I get to post one of those. It is one with mostly sky visible with a third of the bottom filled with hills. I realized yesterday looking at different photos of this work that the original size of this painting by Van Gogh is almost exactly the size of mine! Only 1/4 inch off one way and 1 3/4 inch off the other! Also I was thinking how difficult it must have been to be an artist back then. If you wanted to paint a landscape you had to go out and paint plein air! No matter the season! No cameras in your pocket to save the scene for later. And same for portraits and still life, although the latter is much easier to set up in studio. Anyway it's going to be fun finishing up this huge project, though it won't be tomorrow it will be soon and I shall keep posting! See you!
day 28-30 in 30
Back to my Van Gogh project. These grass squares are very difficult. I wanted to get two done a day but the second one will have to be a sky one They are slightly easier.
day 27-30in30
this morning I had class so I am using the resulting painting as day 27. Just a quick sketch in pastel around 8-10" on Uart 500. It's from a photo I took of a farm I walk by all the time. There was a small horse in the photo but I left it out as it was so far away. If I redo
this larger I may put it in.
this larger I may put it in.
day 26-30 in 30
Storm Clouds 12/18
inches
so here is one more pastel started in the workshop yesterday. Finished this morning at home. I adapted I photo I took in SD/MN when my sister and I were driving back to her town in MN. The clouds were quite spectacular an lit by the setting sun.

day 25-30 in 30
Workshop in Pastel today with Laurinda O'Connor. I had a great time focusing on design, mood and playing with color. And making thumbnails, notans and small color block paintings from the thumbnails. I got this painting and one other larger one done which I will save for tomorrow's post! This one is around 7/10".
day 24-30 in 30
today I was gallery sitting and I needed to keep it simple. A sunflower is always a good choice for me! I used Qor watercolors on Yupo. It measures about 6x8
day 23-30 in 30
here is the bottom left square of the Van Gogh. So the whole bottom row is complete
this guy- genius!!
day 22-30 in 30
so I ran out of quality white paint so I had to stick with the grasses instead of the next square of sky. Went on to Blick and ordered some Titanium white and a few other colors from Winsorand Newton. Hopefully they won't take as long as they said on the website. They're usually pretty quick to deliver and I took the 4$ shipping upgrade from the free shipping they had if you spent over 45$. So here you are, more wheat and grasses!
day 21-30 in 30
i got back to my Van Gogh painting this morning. I started with the top of the row as I didn't have much time to do a complicated middle one. I ran out of white paint though so I will have to work on the land till I get more white for the sky.
day 20- 30 in 30
Two thirds of the way through the month!! Yay! I needed to post this painting from class this morning as I had no time to paint another square today. Thus is s pastel from a photo I took at a local pond. I may not be finished or I may do it again larger and add the fisherman who was in the photo! About 7x10"
day 19- 30 in 30
so I needed another break from oils. Some days I just need to pastel. Today I worked from a photo I took of a field near by with a house on the edge of it. I wanted to just work with some bright colors so I did this crazy acrylic colors for an underpainting. You can see it down below. This is 6x 10" and on Uart.
day 18-30 in 30
Another challenging square! For these middle paintings I need 3-4 other squares around them to line up the image continuously. It also helps with color matching. Only half done! But it's beautiful!
day 17- 30 in 30
anther square done in my Van Gogh "quilt". No sky! This one is a bit out of order as it was painted at the same time as the square to it's right. So instead of having three continuous rows done I am missing one kitty corner to this one. I was trying to use up the paint I had mixed so this one got done instead.
day 16- 30 in 30
this one took a while. I think lining up the clouds and hills and trees was difficult today. It's when I enlarge the tiny square to large size I have to make sure the edges still line up on the graph and line up with the other two paintings.
day 15- 30 in 30
one of the many many "sky" sections of Vincent's paintings. I always think it will be easier for some reason and the sky never is. Love the energy he gets and hope it translates into my painting. It's difficult to get continuous motion in the sky when it's broken up into 6 inch sections. I try to make them look connected. Hope it looks that way!
day 14 -30 in 30
back to Van Gogh! I got three done two days ago and one done this morning, so I have a couple ahead of schedule for insurance. Phew, the skies I am getting the hang of as in mixing proper blues. Gorgeous skies Vincent!
day 13- 30 in 30
here is a little 30 minute 8x8 pastel sketch on Uart 500. My friend and I sat outside a local coffee shop (Cilla's) in Norfolk and painted plein air. Her artwork is displayed there for the month of September. What a beautiful September day. "September Days"
day 12- 30 in 30
i got this square and two others done today! Yay! I am glad because I felt like things were going smoothly and didn't want to interrupt the flow.
day 11 -30 in 30
i had to gallery sit today so I packed up my pastels so I could get a painting done. Back to oils tomorrow and Van Gogh! This is 5x7 and from a photo one of my cousins took.
day 10 -30 in 30
today I was feeling pastelish. I think I needed a break from "copying" Van Gogh to create my own painting. Though I may get one 6x6 in later. This is a pastel done with two shades of red-orange underpainting with alcohol. You can see little glowy hints here and there. This is from a photo I took at a nearby pond. This photo is a little dark, even though I edited it pretty close. In real life you can see more green showing. It was a fun break from oils with Vincent!
day 9 -30 in 30
wow I have created a monster! This is taking over my life and my studio! One more 6x6 square and I will have 2 rows done! Yay!
tonight I had a real tough time getting the right area to paint lined up with my panel. Took almost as long to paint as set up! Weird!

day 8 30 in 30
day 8 and I have done 10 paintings. 2 are pastels.
I thought I was ahead but I guess I still technically can post the other pastel for one of my days if I get behind.
Painting this work of art has been a real eye opener! I kind of thought the sky squares would be a little easier, but not at all! Van Gogh used so many colors and so much movement in the sky alone! It's been fun so far!

day 7-30 in 30
day seven and things are going smoothly so far. Van Gogh had some amazing colors in his skies. And great movement! Fun!
day 6-30 in 30
I did not have time to paint this morning as I had pastel class. This was done a few days ago. I had a couple of days in which I finished two paintings, just in case. This is 7x9" on archival sanded paper.
day 5-30 in 30
day 5 means I have completed the far right side row of this painting. It looks great so far! Tomorrow I start the second row beginning at the top. It will have to wait until after my pastel class in the morning. Check back tomorrow night!
thirty in thirty-day four
here is my fourth painting in this series. It's really coming together. I am excited about this project and I am learning a lot.
Thirty In Thirty -day three
here is my third painting in the Van Gogh series. It's coming along great! But I am averaging 2 1/2 - 3 hours on each 6x6! I really am surprised by that. But it's worth it😀
here is my latest pastel 9x11"
Nearly finished and the frame is ready!
